What should you do before using a mitre saw?

Mitre saws can be dangerous if not used properly.

What safety precautions should you follow when using a mitre saw?

• context Wear safety glasses or goggles, or a face shield (with safety glasses or goggles).
• context If work is dusty, use a dust extraction system, respirator, or dust mask.
• context Wear appropriate hearing protection.
• context Wear protective footwear when required.
• context Attach the saw firmly to a workbench or other rigid frame and operate it at waist height. The saw can also be taken to remote locations by mounting it on a piece of plywood 13 mm (1/2 in.) or thicker. This plywood (and saw) must be clamped to a waist-high work surface on the job site with large clamps.
• context Make sure any adjustments are secure before making a cut. Only make adjustments when the power is off and the machine is not moving.
• context Keep one hand on the trigger switch and handle, and use the other hand to hold the stock against the fence.
• context Keep your hands out of the path of the blade.
• context Keep guards in place and in working order.
• context Remove adjusting keys and wrenches.
• context Use a crosscut or combination blade.
• context Ensure that the blade rotates in the correct direction.
• context Ensure that the blade and arbour collars are secure and clean. Recessed sides of collars should be against blade.
• context Keep the blade tight, clean, sharp and properly set so that it cuts freely and easily.
• context Only cut one work piece at a time
• context Allow the motor to reach full speed before cutting
• context Wait for the saw to stop moving before removing the work.
• context Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
• context Keep the work area clean. Cluttered areas and benches invite incidents.
• context Keep the work area well lit.
• context Reduce the risk of unintentional startup. Make sure the saw switch is in the OFF position before plugging in.
• context Unplug tools before servicing and when not in use.
• context Check for damage. Repair or replace damaged parts.
• context Keep motor air slots clean and free of dust and chips.
• context Use only the accessories designed for the specific saw and job.
